Calling all transport operators – sign up for our EV hub

Australia’s first dedicated heavy EV truck charging hub

About the hub

Supported with funding from the Australian Renewable EnergyAgency (ARENA), Mondo is developing, constructing and operating Australia’s first dedicated EV truck charging hub, located in Laverton North, Victoria. Purpose built for electric heavy vehicles and trucks the new Mondo Charging Hub – Laverton North is located in Melbourne’s logistics heartland. The Hub will commence construction in 2025 and operations in late 2026.

The Hub will remove a major barrier to electric trucking: the lack of charging infrastructure. With its strategic location and fast charging capacity, it will provide transport operators with a reliable and cost-effective way to transition to electric trucks, cutting their fuel costs and emissions.

The project has received $12.3M in funding as part of ARENA’s Driving the Nation program. Grant funding will support the installation of the charging infrastructure as well as partly offsetting the difference in the total cost of ownership (TCO) between Diesel and Electric for the first 20 heavy vehicle electric trucks to sign up.

As an important first step in enabling the electrification of heavy transport in Australia the Hub provides truck operators with an easier and more cost-efficient way to enter the EV market. The Hub will provide ultra-fast charging to maximise efficiency of a range of duty cycles and operations. Powered by green energy the Hub will be cost-efficient with competitive pricing and volume discounts to optimise operations both for the hub and its transport partners.

The hub is the first asset in a series of electrified freight corridors Mondo is developing (including Hubs and at-depot charging) to further support the decarbonisation of the freight industry.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a charging hub?

A charging hub is a dedicated, high-reliability, strategically located facility providing fast EV charging bays specifically designed to be fit-for-purpose for commercial and heavy vehicles.

Why is this charging hub important?

Heavy transport is rapidly becoming the highest emitting sector in Australia. The Laverton North Charging Hub provides the fast, reliable, and renewable-powered charging infrastructure needed to enable and accelerate the electrification and decarbonisation of transport and logistics. As well as demonstrating the charging hub model in Australia this project will help reduce emissions, lower operating costs for businesses, and improve air quality for local communities.

Where is the hub located, and why was this location selected?

The hub has been strategically located at Laverton North - one of Australia’s most concentrated major freight regions and  busiest port  to ensure convenience for logistics operators. It was chosen for its accessibility, existing infrastructure, and proximity to distribution centres.

When will the hub open for operation?

The project is targeting an opening in late 2026.

How many trucks will use the site?

The site will host a minimum of 20 trucks initially however the site will be able to cater to more than 80 trucks per day dependent on their make/model and duty cycles.

What role has the government played in funding this project?

Mondo is proud to working with ARENA who are supporting the project with $12.3 million in grant funding through its Driving the Nation program.
This demonstrates strong support for zero-emission transport by the Australian Government and helps accelerate the rollout of vital charging infrastructure to enable decarbonisation of the freight sector.

Will this be the only hub?

The Hub is the first asset in a series of electrified freight corridors Mondo is developing (including Hubs and at-depot charging) to further support the decarbonisation of the freight industry.

What sort of trucks will the charging hub be recharging? What kinds of routes do these trucks usually run?

The charging hub will primarily serve heavy transport vehicles  which provide a range of transport and logistics services such as wharf cartage, local deliveries, food and beverage distribution, and general goods movements.

What is the hub’s energy source?

The charging hub is powered by 100% renewable energy, sourced from a mix of solar, wind, and battery storage solutions. This ensures a zero-emissions operation from end to end.

How much does it cost to charge a truck here?

Pricing is competitive with diesel, offering cost-per-kilometre savings for fleet operators. Rates vary on a range of factors according to usage patterns, the time of use and other factors.

How many trucks can charge here at once?

The hub has multiple high-speed charging bays, allowing simultaneous charging for up to 14 trucks at a time on high speed plugs and up to 28 trucks at a time.

How quickly will it charge a typical battery electric truck?

The charging hub’s fast charging technology means many trucks can charge fully in as little as an hour.

How will customers access the site?

Customers will access the site through joining a Charging Hub Membership, which will include:
1. Access to the charging hub
2. Detailed breakdowns of pricing for charging, including estimated monthly costs
3. Storage, amenities and passenger vehicle parking options

Who will be able to access the hub - can the public use the facility?

As commercial transport operators need certainty and reliability regarding critical infrastructure the charging will only be open to contracted users. The project will feature security to ensure only customers of the project can access the site. However, there may be the capacity to consider opportunity charging and/or public access in future.
